“…Because several authors (Daignault et al, 1988;Hould et al, 1988;Singletary et al, 1986;Yamamoto et al, 1990) have demonstrated the high level of receptors for sex hormones throughout the biliary system, including the gallbladder and the cystic duct, it is possible to refer to our hypothesis (Gilloteaux et al, 1994) whereby we proposed that the gallbladder surface epithelium morphology is influenced by female sex steroids and, hence, would alter its morphology in a similar manner as the endometrial epithelium. Therefore it is not surprising to detect bulging, excrescences, and sloughings of the apical aspects of epithelial cells in a manner similar to that reported previously (Gilloteaux et al, 1992(Gilloteaux et al, , 1993a and similar to that which has been noticed in the endometrium of the Syrian hamster (Gilloteaux and Steggles, 1986) and human (Wessel, 1960;Wetzstein and Wagner, 1960;Wynn and Wooley, 1967) under the periodic or chronic influence of sex hormones. In addition to influencing functional epithelial morphology of the gallbladder, sex steroids may also affect cystic duct motility and metabolism.…”
