Muskulöse Mediasphinkter an Abzweigungen kleiner Arterien.
Elastisch‐kollagene Intimapolster an Aufzweigungen elastischer Arterien jeder Größenordnung.
Summary
Morphological studies on the pulmonary circulation in the horse
The changes that develop with age in the pulmonary circulation are described and discussed on the basis of the examination of 31 horses. The first finding is a general thickening of the vessel walls up to the fifth year, affecting particularly the muscle of the pulmonary arterial trunk, secondly, there is fibrous thickening of the intimal and subendothelial connective tissue, degeneration of the elastic layer, infiltration of the wall by collagen to replace muscle, along with hyalinization. Deposition of calcium salts and lipoids play only a secondary role in these changes.
Apart from changes due to ageing, three animals showed changes which could be classed as arteriosclerotic. In two of these horses they were attributable to hypertension resulting from pulmonary emphysema, with disturbances of nutrition and absorption. The third was probably a case of essential pulmonary hypertension.
A whole series of mechanisms concerned with regulating the pulmonary.
