Darwin: customizable resource management for value-added network services

Abstract: The Internet is rapidly changing from a set of wires and switches that carry packets to a sophisticated infrastructure that delivers a set of complex value-added services to end users. Services can range from bit transport all the way up to distributed value-added services like video teleconferencing, virtual private networking, data mining, and distributed interactive simulations. Before such services can be supported in a general and dynamic manner, we have to develop appropriate resource management mechanis… Show more

“…This low overhead allows us to easily support an actual data speed of 100 Mb/s in our prototype network testbed. A more detailed analysis of the performance of the H-FSC implementation can be found in [6] and some experimental results in [15].…”

“…In [15], Choi et al consider jointly optimizing inter and intra layer functions for improving video over wireless performance. In [16], the authors stress the need for applications to respond to external events where as [17] describes an application driven resource management framework for meeting application requirements. …”

“…Similarly, approaches like Globus Architecture for Reservation and Allocation (GARA) [4] and the Darwin project [3] strive to provide efficient resource management techniques in order to satisfy quality of service requirements of the applications.…”
