In this paper, we evaluate the ergodic capacity analysis of a integrated satellite-terrestrial cooperative communication system under independent and non-identical shadowed Rician and Nakagami-m fading channels. Multiple cooperative relay nodes are assumed between satellite and the destination node. Amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative protocol is used at each fixed relay node for signal amplification. While for signals combining at the destination node, the maximum ratio combining(MRC) technique is exploited. An analytical approach is derived to evaluate the performance of the system in terms of ergodic capacity. We derive the approximate closed-form expression for calculating the ergodic capacity of the proposed system. It is shown that the derived analytical expression is very tight and applicable to the general operating conditions with the help of satellite channel date available from the literature. The analytical results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations, and they seem to agree well.

SUMMARYFuture mobile networks are expected to involve systems that are based on different technologies, such as WiFi, WiMAX, 2G/3G/3G1, LTE, and satellite. To address this scenario, ITU has defined integrated and hybrid networks in the framework of Next-Generation Networks. The interest is to exploit the cooperation of different wireless communication systems (segments) to provide service to mobile users in the most efficient way, taking into account signal quality (coverage), traffic congestion conditions, and cost issues. Integrated and hybrid networks have the potential to be an efficient and cost-effective solution to employ satellite communications for mobile users. In the view of this, our paper focuses on the design of integrated/hybrid systems taking into account physical, MAC, and network layers issues. System examples and standards are described as well. Then, cooperative diversity techniques and traffic engineering issues for overflow traffic are discussed. This paper concludes identifying some possible future trends.

SUMMARYThis paper presents the personalized satellite radio, a novel satellite-based radio concept, capable of providing radio services to vehicular terminals. This paper describes the technical solution proposed, which overcomes the classical streaming approach used for traditional radio. The main concept behind it is that individual audio and multimedia files are broadcast to the mobile users instead of transmitting a number of continuous streams. The received files are stored in a large cache located in the receiver of each mobile terminal and are sequentially played to generate a service similar to traditional radio/entertainment programmes. The resulting file-based radio approach makes, in particular, use of higher-layer coding at the transport layer and smart techniques to build up an audible programme with no interruptions and full audio quality based on the available files. This paper also presents the results of extensive trials that were conducted with a system prototype developed in the framework of an European Space Agency funded project.
