Dark Energy and the Accelerating Universe

Abstract: The discovery ten years ago that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating put in place the last major building block of the present cosmological model, in which the Universe is composed of 4% baryons, 20% dark matter, and 76% dark energy. At the same time, it posed one of the most profound mysteries in all of science, with deep connections to both astrophysics and particle physics. Cosmic acceleration could arise from the repulsive gravity of dark energy -for example, the quantum energy of the vacuum -or … Show more

“…In the context of an accelerating Universe, it is argued by Usmani et al [1] that the equation of state of the kind p = −ρ may be related to the Λ-dark energy, an agent responsible for the second phase of the inflation of Hot Big Bang theory [13,14,15,16,17].…”

“…The factor 2 in front of M is for later convenience, moreover, we will take M > 0 in view of its interpretation as a dynamically generated cosmological constant 1 . Indeed, taking into account (6), the expression (5) becomes:…”

“…According to the standard cosmological model (Λ CDM model [1]- [3]) the energy density of the late time Universe is dominated by two "dark" components -around 70 % made out of "dark energy" [4]- [6] and around 25 % made out of "dark matter" [7]- [9]. Since more than a decade a principal challenge in modern cosmology is to understand theoretically from first principles the nature of both "dark" species of the universe's substance as a manifestation of the dynamics of a single entity of matter.…”

“…Among the models that have been proposed as alternatives to the ΛCDM we can mention the dark energy (DE) [3], a fluid that fills all the space and has negative pressure. The source of this DE can be a scalar field as in quintessential models [4].…”
