An organisation that had developed a large information system wanted to embark on a programme that would involve large-scale evolution of it. As a precursor to this, it was decided to create a comprehensive architectural description to capture and understand the system's design. This undertaking faced a number of challenges, including a low general awareness of software modelling and software architecture practices. The approach taken by the software architects tasked with this project included the definition of a simple, very specific, architecture description language. This paper reports our experience of the project and a simple ADL that we created as part of it.

Component-based development has become a commonly used technique for building complex software systems by composing a set of existing components. In general adapting an application means stopping the application and restarting it after the adaptation. This approach is not suitable for a large classes of software systems in which continuous availability is a critical requirement, hence the need of adapting dynamically the application at runtime. This paper presents an architecture based approach for dynamic adaptation in critical components based software using multi agent system.To achieve this, we use an agent based system to perform the adaptation. The agent system is guided by an architectural description. The adaptation mechanism is implemented within the connectors using the flexibility offered by the Java script language techniques. The script language Groovy is used. The evaluation is made by comparing the execution time before and after the adaptation mechanism.The paper is structured as follows: section 2 presents related works to dynamic adaptation. Section 3 describes the proposed solution to achieve a dynamic update of components-based software applications. The implementation details and some measurements relative to our solution are given in section 4. Section 5 concludes and presents some perspectives.

The increasing size and complexity of distributed systems create a need to raise the level of abstraction for their development. This need becomes critical for pervasive computing where non-functional properties, such as security, must be guaranteed. Architecture description languages (ADLs) propose a promising approach to coping with the size and complexity of pervasive computing systems. A system is defined by a high-level description that may be used to produce a programming framework. However, non-functional properties are not specifically addressed by existing ADL works. To address this issue aspect-oriented programming is a wellproven technique to properly modularize non-functional concerns that can be dealt with by weaving dedicated code into a program.In this paper, we present DiaAspect, an aspect-oriented language for an ADL. ADLs are a key to our approach because they expose features enabling an accurate coordination of aspects. We demonstrate the expressiveness of DiaAspect with two examples of security policies in pervasive computing. We also show how, combining the knowledge of the architecture description with aspect code, improves aspect weaving in the implementation code.
