Danhong Injection Protects Against Hypertension-Induced Renal Injury Via Down-Regulation of Myoglobin Expression in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

Abstract: Background/Aims: High blood pressure is a major risk factor for chronic kidney disease. Currently, single-target anti-hypertensive drugs are not designed for high blood pressure-related organ damages. Danhong injection (DHI), made from the aqueous extracts of Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae and Flos Carthamus tinctorius, has various pharmacological effects, including BP lowering in SHR, mediated by the reduction of vascular remodeling and the up-regulation of Kallikrein-kinin system published recently by our team,… Show more

“…Therefore, "promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis" is the principle for treatment of hypertensive nephropathy (Xiong et al, 2013). DHI is formulated based on the TCM theory of "activating and promoting blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis and dredge collaterals" (Owoicho Orgah et al, 2018). Although the indications of DHI focus on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, "blood stasis" is the common TCM "zheng" of hypertensive nephropathy and cardiovascular diseases.…”

“…We have shown previously that a two-component compound formula composed of Radix Salvia miltiorrhizae and Carthamus tinctorius , Danhong injection, reduces vascular remodeling and up-regulates the kallikrein-kinin system in spontaneously hypertensive rats ( Yang et al, 2017 ). Importantly, Danhong injection protects hypertension-induced renal injury via downregulation of myoglobin expression in spontaneously hypertensive rats ( Owoicho Orgah et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Studies have shown that a variety of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions exhibit clear efficacy in the treatment of HN [ 11 , 12 ]. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes dialectical diagnosis and treatment, but the commonly used treatment with traditional Chinese medicine and its underlying biological basis have not been systematically examined and studied.…”
