The study aimed to evaluate the surface water quality of the Tien River and identify water quality parameters to be monitored using the water quality monitoring data in the period of 2011 - 2019. The water samples were collected at five locations from Tan Chau to Cho Moi districts, An Giang province for three times per year (i.e., in March, June, and September). Water quality parameters included temperature (oC), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids (TSS), nitrate (NO3--N), orthophosphate (PO43--P), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and coliforms. These parameter results were compared with the national technical regulation on surface water quality QCVN 08-MT: 2015/BTNMT, column A1. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the sources of pollution and the main factors affecting water quality. The results of this study showed that DO concentration was lower and TSS, BOD, PO43--P, coliforms concentrations in the Tien river exceeded QCVN 08-MT: 2015/BTNMT, column A1. pH, temperature, and NO3--N values were in accordance with the permitted regulation. The water monitoring parameters were seasonally fluctuated. DO, BOD, TSS, and coliforms concentrations were higher in the rainy season whereas NO3--N and PO43--P were higher in the dry season. The PCA results illustrated that pH, TSS, DO, BOD, PO43--P and coliforms should be included in the monitoring program. Other indicators such as temperature and NO3--N could be considered excluded from the program to save costs.

This study focuses on detecting and mitigating soil salinization in four coastal areas of the Mekong Delta (Vietnam). Salinity patterns in the soils of the Mekong River Delta are not random but linked to land use practices and distance to the sea. We examine two quick yet reliable remote sensing-based techniques to detect the coastal aquaculture area and separate it from the inland freshwater farmland. These techniques can eventually be used to identify locations with an elevated risk of salinization in other coastal regions. Finally, we investigate a salinization mitigation solution based on creating a managed aquifer recharge system along the buffer zone that separates the coastal aquaculture area from the inland freshwater agriculture area. The implementation of an infiltration pond system is technically feasible in the Mekong Delta provided that hydrogeological characteristics, the fresh-saline interface position, and freshwater demands are considered. The transitional zone between freshwater agriculture and brackish water aquaculture in Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh and Ben Tre provinces is optimal for implementing an aquifer recharge/freshwater barrier scheme.

Surface water is essential to life, but it is seriously influenced by anthropogenic and natural impacts. Extraction of inside information (for examples sources and key variables influencing water quality) from monitoring data of surface water quality is a crucial task. This study was to intensively evaluate surface water quality in North Vam Nao using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA). The water quality parameters from seven locations during the period 2010–2022 including temperature, pH, total suspended solids (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate (NO3−-N), ammonium (NH4+-N), orthophosphate (PO43−-P) and coliforms were collected. The results show that surface water quality is seasonally varied, except for pH. The PCA results predicted the main sources of water pollution were possibly hydrological conditions (rainfall, erosion) and human activities (domestic, agricultural and industrial activities). CA classified the water quality into three clusters for both dry and wet seasons. The common pollutants in both seasons were total suspended solids, organic matters, nutrients, and coliform. All the parameters temperature, pH, TSS, DO, BOD, COD, NH4+-N, NO3−-N, PO43−-P and coliform are key surface water parameters needed to be monitored. The results of the current study could be used for designing surface water monitoring at the study area.
