Dandelions, tulips and orchids: evidence for the existence of low-sensitive, medium-sensitive and high-sensitive individuals

Abstract: According to empirical studies and recent theories, people differ substantially in their reactivity or sensitivity to environmental influences with some being generally more affected than others. More sensitive individuals have been described as orchids and less-sensitive ones as dandelions. Applying a data-driven approach, we explored the existence of sensitivity groups in a sample of 906 adults who completed the highly sensitive person (HSP) scale. According to factor analyses, the HSP scale reflects a bifac… Show more

“…Physical and emotional stressors may be perceived or may remain unconscious and threaten the homeostatic and/or emotional well‐being of the individual . Trait anxiety and trait sensory sensitivity are related to proneness to physiological arousal to stressors . Stress responses involve the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis, in which cortisol is released as part of the anti‐inflammatory response .…”

“…All three forms of coping were reported by children in the sample, with varying degrees of success in helping them cope with stress. Individual differences (e.g., personality), sensitivity to context and environment are also factors in the development of resilience (Boyce & Ellis, 2005;Lionetti et al, 2018;Masten, 2014). The success of different coping strategies is situational and person dependent.…”

“…Individuals who are high in SPS have been described as being "particularly sensitive to subtle stimuli, easily overstimulated, prone to 'pause to check' in a novel situation, and prefer[ring] to reflect and revise their cognitive maps after an experience" (Aron, Aron, & Davies, 2005, p. 181). It is suggested that a small proportion of people in the population are more sensitive (e.g., Aron & Aron, 1997; for a recent statistical analysis, see Lionetti et al, 2018).…”
