Damages to magnetic slot wedges in induction machines

Abstract: Purpose -Magnetic slot wedges are usually installed in open slot high-voltage induction machines. They reduce the no load losses and the magnetization current. Additionally, the leakage inductance increases. However, machines and the slot wedges are getting frequently damaged with a decreasing maintenance interval. The usage of magnetic slot wedges leads to unknown effects. It is possible, that direct magnetic forces or indirect forces, caused by the deformation of the stator or stator teeth during operation, … Show more

“…Scholars have done relevant research on improving the distribution of air gap magnetic field of the electric machine by using magnetic wedges (Xiao et al , 2018; De Donato et al , 2012; Schmülling and Kulig, 2015). Some experts had studied the induction motor performance when the magnetic slot wedges are installed, and the results show that the magnetic slot wedges can improve the efficiency and reduce the temperature rise of the induction motor (Gaerke and Hernandez, 2013; Mikami et al , 1997).…”

“…The influence of metal rotor slot wedges in a turbine generator is involved in [17]. The magnetic wedge failure modes, such as loosening and disintegration, might cause serious damage as has been increasingly reported [14,18]. Thus, mechanical stress should be carefully considered in magnetic slot wedge design.…”
