Damage to the Immature Optic Radiation Causes Severe Reduction of the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer, Resulting in Predictable Visual Field Defects

Abstract: Primary injuries in the immature OR are associated with reduced RNFL thickness, and examination of the RNFL may be a helpful predictor of VF defects.

Lennartsson et al 25 performed brain MRI and OCT in seven cases of young adults born preterm with known white matter damage due to immaturity and concluded that RNFL loss was more pronounced in subjects with more extensive lesions, following the pattern of the optic radiation damage.
