Plant-parasitic nematodes are not only an important constraint on agricultural crop production, but also cause both direct and indirect damage to turfgrass, which is a ground cover plant. However, studies on plant-parasitic nematodes of turfgrass in Korea are scarce. A survey for plant-parasitic nematodes was carried out on 13 golf courses in Korea. The results yielded 28 species/taxa belonging to 16 genera and 12 families of plant-parasitic nematodes. Among the isolated species, Helicotylenchus microlobus, Mesocriconema nebraskense, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni, Mesocriconema sp., and Meloidogyne graminicola were the most prevalent species in all management zones. Twelve species were new records of plant-parasitic nematodes in Korea. Highest maximum densities were showed by T. claytoni, Paratylenchus nanus, M. nebraskense, M. graminicola, and H. microlobus. Diversity (H’), was significantly higher in fairways compared to tees and greens, though species evenness (J’) and dominance (D) showed no statistically significant differences. This information is crucial in nematode problem diagnosis, and the subsequent formulation of management strategies.

ABSTRACT. Insect pests have been one of the main constraints affecting turf sod cultivation areas, playgrounds, parks, golf courses, airports and other related recreational grounds. However, turfgrass research has been very limited and confined within a limited period of time compared to other branches of crop science in Korea. This review was surveyed from all papers in KCI (Korea Citation Index), SCI (Scientific Citation Index) and SCIE (SCI Expended) journals related to turfgrass research in Korea. Fifty two papers concerning turfgrass insect pest in Korea have hitherto been published in 8 different scientific journals since 1990. Thirty three papers (63.5% of total) were published in Weed and Turfgrass Science. The main topics of focus were divided into two parts; ecological study and control of insect pests. Before the 1990 decade, there were no scientific papers published in relation to turfgrass insect pest science. However, during the 1990, 2000 and 2010 decades, 9, 10 and 14 papers were published respectively in Weed and Turfgrass Science. From 1997, about 2 papers were published per year in the scientific journals. Thirty three insect pest species belonging to 13 families in 6 orders, one Eriophyidae mite, Aceria zoysia and one Armadillidae sowbug, Armadillidium vulgare, have hitherto been listed as turfgrass arthropod pests in Korea. Fifty percent of turfgrass insect pest papers published were focused on whitegrub, Adoretus tenuimaculatus, Popillia quadrigutta and earthworm research in Korea.

The prevention of the loss of agricultural resources caused by pests is an important issue. Advances are being made in technologies, but current farm management methods and equipment have not yet met the level required for precise pest control, and most rely on manual management by professional workers. Hence, a pest detection system based on deep learning was developed for the automatic pest density measurement. In the proposed system, an image capture device for pheromone traps was developed to solve nonuniform shooting distance and the reflection of the outer vinyl of the trap while capturing the images. Since the black pine bast scale pest is small, pheromone traps are captured as several subimages and they are used for training the deep learning model. Finally, they are integrated by an image stitching algorithm to form an entire trap image. These processes are managed with the developed smartphone application. The deep learning model detects the pests in the image. The experimental results indicate that the model achieves an F1 score of 0.90 and mAP of 94.7% and suggest that a deep learning model based on object detection can be used for quick and automatic detection of pests attracted to pheromone traps.
