Damage Detection Based on 3D Point Cloud Data Processing from Laser Scanning of Conveyor Belt Surface

Abstract: Usually, substantial part of a mine haulage system is based on belt conveyors. Reliability of such system is significant in terms of mining operation continuity and profitability. Numerous methods for conveyor belt monitoring have been developed, although many of them require physical presence of the monitoring staff in the dangerous environment. In this paper, a remote sensing method for assessing a conveyor belt condition using the Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) system has been described. For this purpose a… Show more

“…The current status of the development trends in, and the potential for, TLS application in mining areas were described in detail in [21]. Based on active sensors, LiDAR techniques help to detect the shape of the object, which can be transported by the conveyor belt [22] and detect the damage [23]. In the present case study, the acquired point cloud allowed the building of a 3D BIM model in order to reconstruct the shape of the analyzed equipment (transfer station).…”

“…Various examples of these incidents have been reported. 5,6) Contact sensors using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, 7,8) non-contact sensors such as electromagnetic sensors 9,10) and optical fibers, 11) optical non-contact measurements such as laser scanners, 12) thermographic cameras, 13,14) and video cameras, 15,16) are widely used for measuring the conveyer operation status. These contact and non-contact sensors requiring direct or near-side installation of the measurement object can realize high-precision measurements.…”

“…In contrast to the image processing method, which extracts characteristics from the color or brightness of pixels in the two-dimensional images, the method based on point cloud processing deals with a set of three-dimensional point coordinates [ 21 , 22 ]. It means that this method can achieve more accurate data acquisition and three-dimensional measurement of object surface [ 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”
