Damage and Failure in an X65 Steel Pipeline Caused by Trawl Gear Impact

Abstract: Offshore pipelines subjected to accidental impact loads from trawl gear or anchors may experience large global deformations and large local strains, creating a complex stress and strain history. In this study experiments and numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the impact of a pipeline which is subsequently hooked and released. Material and component tests have been performed to investigate the behaviour during impact, and to observe if/when fracture occurs. The pipes were first impacted … Show more

“…This necesstates an assessment regarding the hazards and potential damage following such an event [3], as failure in a pipeline transporting oil and/or gas could result in severe environmental damage and economic losses. After the initial impact, the object may entangle with the pipeline and drag it out of position before it is finally released and thereby rebounds towards its initial position [4]. The Petroleum Safety Authority of Norway has published a comprehensive list online of accidental damage to structures in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea [5].…”

“…This load cycle causes a complex stress and strain history which in turn may lead to fracture [5]. The load sequence 5 of denting followed by stretching was applied quasi-statically to strips of an X65 pipeline material by Manes et al [6], without producing any significant cracks. Further, Kristoffersen et al [7] carried out dynamic impact tests on simply supported pipes followed by quasi-static stretching of the dented pipes to emulate the rebound of a pipeline after release from a hooking event.…”
