Dairy consumption is inversely associated with the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in Tehranian adults

Abstract: Dairy consumption is inversely associated with the risk of having metabolic syndrome. It seems that this relation is somewhat attributed to calcium.

“…An inverse relationship between a healthy dietary pattern and risk of general and central adiposity was also indicated in a study among Iranian women (Esmaillzadeh and Azadbakht, 2008). Other studies (Azizi et al, 2005;Azadbakht et al, 2005) found that dietary pattern characterized by low-fat dairy products, grains and fruits was inversely associated with changes in waist circumference and BMI in women.…”

“…Azadbakht et al [1] showed that subjects in the highest quartile of dairy consumption (milk, yogurt, cheese, and milk-based-desserts) had lower odds of having enlarged waist circumference, hypertension, and MetS. Likewise, in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study, Pereira et al [8] found that among individuals (aged 18-30 years) who were overweight at baseline, dairy consumption was inversely associated with the incidence of obesity, abnormal glucose homeostasis, dyslipidemia, and hypertension over the next 10 years.…”

“…Cardiometabolic risk is characterized by a cluster of risk factors that includes obesity, abnormal glucose homeostasis, dyslipidemia, and hypertension [1] and [2]. In adults, the positive association between the clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors and cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes is clearly established, and a similar relationship has been described in children and adolescents [3] and [4].…”

“…Some investigations have reported the relationship between consumption of vegetable oils (21) , red meat (22) , fruits and vegetables (23,24) and soya (25) with inflammatory biomarkers, but we are aware of no study evaluating the association between dairy consumption and circulating levels of inflammatory markers. On the other hand, recent studies have shown an inverse relationship between dairy consumption and metabolic abnormalities, such as obesity (26)(27)(28) , diabetes (29,30) , metabolic syndrome (31,32) and insulin resistance (33) , but the mechanisms have not been fully understood. Dairy products are a rich source of Ca; a nutrient seems to be responsible for dairy's beneficial effect (34) .…”
