Daily Reportable Disease Spatiotemporal Cluster Detection, New York City, New York, USA, 2014–2015

Abstract: Each day, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene uses the free SaTScan software to apply prospective space–time permutation scan statistics to strengthen early outbreak detection for 35 reportable diseases. This method prompted early detection of outbreaks of community-acquired legionellosis and shigellosis.

“…First, our study, which should be viewed as proof-of-concept, was conducted retrospectively using previously collected surveillance data and laboratory samples. Although our spatiotemporal strategy has shown similar promise to enhance infectious disease surveillance in high-and low-income settings, future studies are needed to assess the real-time performance of our approach in the context of prospective surveillance in a low-income setting [35][36][37]. Second, our viral detection strategy relied on upper respiratory tract samples that may reflect carriage and not lower respiratory tract infection.…”

“…One such tool utilized by the DOHMH is SaTScan 13. The DOHMH applies the SaTScan software daily to identify spatial-temporal clusters in reportable disease data 2,3. The DOHMH began using SaTScan in February 2014 to prospectively monitor occurrences of 35 diseases, including legionellosis.…”

“…Using data at the DA level from the BC‐HTC allows for accurate identification of HCV infection clusters that can assist local health authorities in HCV services delivery and targeted interventions to prevent and provide care for HCV infection. Through regular updates of the BC‐HTC data, real time and timely HCV data can be provided and analysed through these methods particularly SatScan as has been done in other jurisdictions with infectious diseases . Interventions can then be targeted to HCV core areas and evaluation of HCV prevention programmes can be conducted to improve service delivery and prevent HCV.…”
