The DARHT-II linear-induction accelerator has been successfully operated at 1.2-1.3 kA and 12.5-12.7 MeV to demonstrate the production and acceleration of an electron beam. Beam pulse lengths for these experiments were varied from 0.5 s to 1.2 s full-width half-maximum. A low-frequency inductance-capacitance (LC ) oscillation of diode voltage and current resulted in an oscillation of the beam position through interaction with an accidental (static) magnetic dipole in the diode region. There was no growth in the amplitude of this oscillation after propagating more than 44 m through the accelerator, and there was no loss of beam current that could be measured. The results of these initial experiments are presented in this paper.

Feasibility Study-II examined a high-performance Neutrino Factory providing 1 × 10 20 neutrinos per year aimed at a long-baseline detector. The Study was sponsored jointly by BNL and the Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration (MC) and is based on a 1 MW proton driver operating at 24 GeV, i.e., an upgraded version of the AGS accelerator. Compared with the earlier FNAL-sponsored study (Feasibility Study-I), there is a sixfold improvement in performance. Here we describe details of the implementation of Study-II concepts and discuss their efficacy. Alternative approaches that will be pursued in follow-on R&D activities are also described briefly.

The second axis (Axis II) of the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is an electron linear induction accelerator (LIA) using 74 induction cells, each driven by a separate pulse-forming-networkbased Marx (PFN). The ability to perform precise multipulse radiography is heavily influenced by the temporal beam-energy spread, beam-pulse width, related beam motion, and other focusing and target factors. The nominal beam-pulse flattop width is about 1.6 µs. A wider beam pulse would allow for increased spacing between kicked pulses and hence more information in radiographic experiments. A flattop pulse-width increase of even 50 to 100 ns would be of significant value.In this paper, we present analyses, simulations and data for three low-cost, relatively easy means of lengthening the beam pulse for multipulse radiography. The first involves optimizing the PFN charging voltages such that their respective cell pulse widths are nearly the same. The second method studies the utility of timing the cell voltage pulses such that their trailing edges are aligned instead the leading edges. And the third method, presents experimental data on the effects of increasing the cell core reset currents which increases the available volt-second (V-s) products in the cores yielding increased pulse width.
