D-dimer and CA 125 levels in patients with ovarian cancer during antineoplastic therapy prognostic significance for the success of anti-cancer treatment

Abstract: In patients with ovarian cancer before they receive chemotherapy, the level of fibrin degradation products (D‐dimer), is correlated with the tumor load. In this study, the evolution of D‐dimer was compared in patients receiving antineoplastic therapy with the evolution of the disease. The patients could be classified into three groups. In Group 1 (nine patients), both plasma CA 125 (a tumor‐associated antigen) and D‐dimer remained elevated; the prognosis was always poor. In Group 2 (eight patients), CA 125 and… Show more

“…32 It is a sensitive marker of the fibrinolytic enhancement. 32 As in many other human malignancies, [33][34][35][36][37][38] including lung carcinoma, DD might have prognostic significance. 12,15,39 In 1993, Seitz et al 12 reported that TAT and DD were significantly increased in patients with metastatic disease and that elevated TAT values at diagnosis might be prognostically significant.…”

“…16 Interestingly, plasma D-dimer levels have been shown to correlate with tumor markers such as CA-125 in ovarian cancer 32,33 and carcinoembryonic antigen in colorectal cancer. 18 The latter study demonstrated that high D-dimer levels predicted disease progression and overall survival better than carcinoembryonic antigen did, indicating that assays of D-dimer may serve as a useful strategy for disease monitoring in patients undergoing therapy.…”

“…Wieding and colleagues (93) found no differences in mean antithrombin levels and activities in 57 women with advanced breast cancer before, compared to after, receiving one cycle of different chemotherapy regimens. During five cycles of cisplatinum doxorubicin 5 fluorouracil chemotherapy in 26 ovarian cancer patients in FIGO stage III and IV Mirshahi et al (105) serially determined D-dimer where mean levels decreased in 8 patients but remained unchanged and above normal in 18. No information about DVT was given.…”
