d- and l-amino acids in Antarctic lakes: assessment of a very sensitive HPLC-MS method

Abstract: Amino acids represent a fraction of organic matter in marine and freshwater ecosystems, and a source of carbon, nitrogen and energy. L-Amino acids are the most common enantiomers in nature because these chiral forms are used during the biosynthesis of proteins and peptide. To the contrary, the occurrence of D-amino acids is usually linked to the presence of bacteria. We investigated the distribution of L-and D-amino acids in the lacustrine environment of Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, in order to define their nat… Show more

“…For other amino acids, where a labeled standard was unavailable, an internal standard was used to quantify the analytes. A detailed description of which analytes are quantified with which method can be found in Barbaro et al (2014). In both cases, the results were corrected for daily instrumental sensitivity variations by evaluating the instrumental response factors.…”

“…Quantifications of the AA were obtained using highperformance liquid chromatography with a chiral column coupled with tandem mass spectrometry for detection (HPLC-MS/ MS) (Barbaro et al, 2014). PC were analyzed using reverse-phase chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (Zangrando et al, 2013), whereas sugars were determined using ion chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (IC-MS) (Barbaro et al, 2015a).…”

“…Indeed, peptidoglycan in microbial cellular walls contains a high proportion of D-Ala, D-Asp, D-Glu and D-Ser (Dittmar et al, 2001;McCarthy et al, 1998). Due to their low volatility, AAs have been observed in condensed phases such as particulate matter (Barbaro et al, 2011;Barbaro et al, 2015;Di Filippo et al, 2014;Matsumoto and Uematsu, 2005;Scalabrin et al, 2012), dew (Scheller, 2001), rain (Mace et al, 2003b;Mace et al, 2003c), fog (Zhang and Anastasio, 2003), microlayer (Kuznetsova et al, 2004;Matrai et al, 2008), lakes (Barbaro et al, 2014) and marine waters (Kuznetsova et al, 2004;Matrai et al, 2008;Sommerville and Preston, 2001).…”
