“…The establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960 temporarily ended armed conflict; President Makarios steered Cyprus away from the bipolar world politics and joined the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961. Thus, it has always been in the interest of both camps of the Cold War to “win Cyprus over” (Koura, 2021), which would imply a commercial integration. Crisis erupted on 3 November 1963, with a proposal for constitutional change announced by President Makarios to abolish separate municipalities and departments of education and to change the ratio of the two communities in civil service (Dodd, 2010; Stelgias and Antreou, 2020).…”
