Cytotoxicity anticancer activities of anastrozole against breast, liver hepatocellular, and prostate cancer cells

Abstract: Objectives:To investigate the cytotoxic effect of anastrozole on breast (MCF7), liver hepatocellular (HepG2), and prostate (PC3) cancer cells. Methods:This is a prospective study. Anastrozole’s mechanism of apoptosis in living cells was also determined by high content screening (HCS) assay. Methylthiazol tetrazolium (MTT) assay was carried out at the Centre of Biotechnology Research’s, Al-Nahrain University, Baghdad, Iraq between July 2015 and October 2015. The HCS assay was performed at the Centre for Natural … Show more

“…Nuclear intensities following treatment with other tamoxifen concentrations (50-6.25 µg/mL) showed no significant difference (25.49%-4.10%) compared with the control (P < 0.0001). Similar results were previously obtained following treatment of MCF7 cells with anastrozole [27] . MCF7: breast cancer cell line; MMP: mitochondrial membrane potential; CV: cell viability; NI: nuclear intensity; CP: cell permeability; CC: cytochrome c; LSD: least significant difference.…”

“…We have previously investigated the cytotoxicity and anticancer activities of several aryl phosphonates on MCF7 cells [25] . Recently, we also reported the cytotoxic activities of anastrozole in several cancer cell lines [26,27] . In the current study, we report the cytotoxic effects of tamoxifen in MCF7 cancer cells.…”

“…Anastrozole is an aromatase inhibitor and therefore prevents the conversion of androgens to oestrogens, and is used as an anti-breast cancer treatment. 2 Mrs X underwent a left nipple-sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction using a free abdominal based flap. The mastectomy involved an elliptical incision to excise the previous lumpectomy scars and the underlying breast tissue.…”
