Cytotoxicity and Antimicrobial Activity of the Methanol Extract and Compounds from Polygonum limbatum

Abstract: The present study was designed to investigate the antimicrobial activity and the cytotoxicity of the methanol extract (PLA) as well as fractions (PLA1-4) and compounds [cardamomin (1), (±)-polygohomoisoflavanone (2), (S)-(-)-pinostrobin (3), 2',4'-dihydroxy-3',6'-dimethoxychalcone (4), (2S)-(-)-5-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxyflavanone (5), and (2S)-(-)-5,7-dimethoxyflavanone (6)] obtained from leaves of Polygonum limbatum. The microbroth dilution was used to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the … Show more

“…But the combination treatment has significant risk of neutropenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia side effects, also result in drug resistance. Clinical drug resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy is considered a major impediment in the treatment of cervical cancer (Dzoyem et al, 2012). Its current treatments have a number of undesired adverse side effects.…”

“…Several phytochemicals isolated from the Cameroonian medicinal plants were previously reported for their cytotoxicty against cancer cells. Some of them include flavonoids from Polygonum limbatum [9], Dorstenia species [10] and isoflavonoids from Erythrina excelsa and Erythrina senegalensis [8]. Also, the bioactivity of some of the compounds reported herein such as abyssinone IV [11], atalantoflavone [12], bidwillon A [13] and neocyclomorusin [14] was reported.…”

“…The range of available flavanones includes (±)-pinostrobin (1), isolated from balsam poplar Populus balsamifera L. 1 The compound 1 has been shown to possess antiproliferative, 2 antimicrobial, 3 neuroprotective, 4 and anti-inflammatory 5 proper-ties. The development of methods for chemical modification of pinostrobin (1) opens new possibilities for creating new compounds with specific biological activity.…”
