Cytotoxic effects of MgO nanoparticles on human umbilical vein endothelial cells in vitro

Abstract: The MgO nanoparticles are widely used in many fields. However, the toxicity of these nanoparticles to cells and organs remains fairly undiscovered. In this study, the cytotoxicity of MgO nanoparticles on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in vitro was examined. The morphology and size of MgO nanoparticles were analysed by the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and nanoparticle size analyser. MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2 h-tetrazolium bromide) assay, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenyli… Show more

“…In previous studies, it was demonstrated that low concentrations (,200 µg/mL) of MgO and Se NPs have no cytotoxicity when examined by MTT assay. 13,19,22,23 In this regard, PaTu cells (1×10 5 cells/well) were exposed to logarithmically increasing concentrations of MgO NPs (0.1, 1, 10, and 100 µg/mL) and Se NPs (0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 µg/mL) at 37°C in a 5% CO 2 humidified atmosphere. After 24 hours of treatment, the cells were incubated to determine the viability using the MTT assay.…”

“…29 A systematic study of the mechanisms of interaction of nonfunctionalized CdTe and CdSe/ZnS QDs with a panel of live human cells of different origin has demonstrated that the nonfunctionalized QDs exploit the cell's active transport machineries for intranuclear delivery. 30 The effects of NPs such as carbon black, 31 silver, 32 metal oxides, 33 MgO, 34 SiO 2 , 35 QDs, 21 and polymeric NPs 19 on ECs have been studied under static conditions. However, no comprehensive study has been undertaken to evaluate the interaction of engineered NPs on human ECs under varying flow conditions.…”

“…There is no data on toxicity and antileishmanial property of MgO NPs, but there are some studies on antibacterial activity of MgO NPs against certain Gram positive and negative bacteria (Lin et al, 2005). Previously study indicated that low concentrations of MgO NPs have no cytotoxicity, but their high concentrations have mild toxicity on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (Ge et al, 2011). The flow cytometry method shows that uncoated MgO NPs can generate reactive oxygen species, which induces apoptosis (Krishnamoorthy et al, 2012).…”
