Cytotoxic Effects of Air Freshener Biocides in Lung Epithelial Cells

Abstract: This study evaluated the cytotoxicity of mixtures of citral (CTR) and either benzisothiazolinone (BIT, Mix-CTR-BIT) or triclosan (TCS, Mix-CTR-TCS) in human A549 lung epithelial cells. We investigated the effects of various mix ratios of these common air freshener ingredients on cell viability, cell proliferation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and DNA damage. Mix-CTR-BIT and Mix-CTR-TCS significantly decreased the viability of lung epithelial cells and inhibited cell growth in a dose-dependent mann… Show more

“…However, TCS-stimulated ROS production has been poorly studied in mammalian cells. The only available data refer to the human lung epithelial (A549) cell line, rat embryonal stem cells and mouse neuronal cells [14, 16, 32]. Furthermore, up to today, no studies have been undertaken to investigate the involvement of NMDARs or ROS-dependent excitotoxicity in the nervous system’s response to TCS.…”

“…According to environmental studies, chronic use of air fresheners by inhalation or ingestion is harmful for all living organisms. These products have endocrine disrupting phthalates (di-cyclohexyl phthalate, di-isononyl phthalate, and di-n-propyl phthalate) and cytotoxic effects [19,20]. Environmentalists advise to periodically change the brands and flavors of air fresheners used to avoid chronic exposures [21].…”

“…BP-3 may also disrupt the levels of PPARγ receptor, down-regulating surfactant protein expression in alveolar type II cells 9 , essential for lung maturation. Triclosan was shown to decrease the viability, growth and morphology of lung epithelial cells 67 . Parabens, triclosan, and BP-3 can also increase biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation 68 .…”
