Eleven children suffered recurrent episodes of knee stiffness (“catcher's crouch syndrome”) after receiving HPV‐77DK12 rubella vaccine. One was evaluated by arthroscopy and the synovium was found to be hypertrophied posteriorly and to protrude in folds into the intercondylar notch and lateral joint space. Culture for rubella virus was unsuccessful. The authors' observations provide evidence that “catcher's crouch syndrome” is a synovial disease and that chronic joint disease can be a sequela of rubella immunization.

A sensitive complement‐dependent chromium release cytotoxicity assay was used to determine whether sera from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients contain antibody specific for an antigen on rheumatoid synovial cell cultures. Two hundred eight RA sera–RA synovial culture combinations were studied employing 21 sera and 16 synovial membranes; control combinations were derived from 5 normal sera and 10 degenerative joint disease synovial membranes. Anticomplementary activity of some rheumatoid sera was overcome using an increased complement concentration. The percent cytotoxicity of RA serum–RA culture combinations, both homologous and autologous, was not significantly greater than that of RA serum–control culture combinations. No correlation between duration of disease or duration of cell culture and percent cytotoxicity was found. Thus a unique antigen on cultured rheumatoid synovial cells was not recognized by rheumatoid serum antibody by use of this cytotoxicity assay.

In the present study we compared specific lysis of various autologous target cells in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis JIA; n = 8) or rheumatoid arthritis RA; n = 17) with those of healthy controls (n = 15). ⁵¹Cr-release cytotoxic assay with autologous peripheral blood mononuclear cells as effector cells was used. When compared with controls, effector cells of patients with JIA or RA were found to lyse significantly autologous synovial cells (p < 0.0005) and epidermal keratinocytes (p < 0.0005), however, no difference was found for autologous dermal fibroblasts.
