Based on sequence data of the nuclear ITS and plastid matK, trnL-F and psbA-trnH markers of 162 species (169 accessions), the relationships and monophyly of tribe Hedysareae and its close relatives were assessed, with special reference to the infrageneric phylogeny of Hedysarum. The results showed that Hedysareae sensu Lock is not monophyletic, and its relationships with tribe Galegeae are unclear. Tribe Galegeae is polyphyletic. Hedysareae sensu Lock includes two strongly supported clades: the Caraganean clade and the Hedysaroid clade. Tribe Caraganeae Ranjbar was supported to be recognized based on the Caraganean clade, but it is herein suggested to be re-circumscribed by excluding Chesneya and Gueldenstaedtia. Our results support treating the Hedysaroid clade as tribe Hedysareae, comprising nine genera: Alhagi, Corethrodendron, Ebenus, Eversmannia, Greuteria, Hedysarum, Onobrychis, Sulla and Taverniera. Hedysarum as delimited here consists of three main clades: the first clade (the mesic group) corresponds to H. sect. Hedysarum; the second clade (the xeric group) is the re-defined H. sect. Multicaulia, consisting of the core group of H. sect. Multicaulia plus the former genus Sartoria; and the third clade (the psychrophilic group) includes the monospecific H. sect. Stracheya (with H. tibeticum) and two species previously placed in H. sect. Multicaulia (H. kumaonense, H. lehmannianum).

Karyotype properties of of six endemic Onobrychis taxa (O. beata, O. cilicica, O. fallax, O. podperae, O. sulphurea and O. lasistanica) naturally grown in Turkey were determined using squash preparation method and similarity of these endemics with cultivated taxon (O. viciifolia) were revealed. Ploidy levels of Onobrychis taxa were diploid (2n=14) except O. lasistanica and O. viciifolia (2n=28). Basic chromosome number is x=7 and chromosomes ranged from median to sub median with regard to centromere position. While the longest total chromosome length was measured in O. cilicica (28.21 µm), the shortest total chromosome length was in O. beata (21.47 µm). O. cilicica and O. sulphurea have satellite on chromosome 1 and chromosome 2, respectively. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to determine the relationships among the Onobrychis taxa and they were separated into three groups. O. fallax, and O. podperae were in the first group while O. sulphurea and O. cilicica were in the second group. O. beata, O. lasistanica, and O. viciifolia were assigned to the third group.

Climate change is threatening environmental and nutritional security. In this scenario, forage crops and their wild relatives may contribute to maintain ecosystem services and minimize the effects of global warming. We reviewed the literature regarding the ecological, agronomic and nutraceutical values of wild Onobrychis Miller species (sainfoins, Family Fabaceae). We also discuss their application prospect and existing problems hampering their widespread domestication. Wild species of the genus Onobrychis have certain interesting agronomic and ecological features such as perenniality, deep root system and high stress tolerance, which make them suitable for future cultivation under climate change. Wild Onobrychis species are multipurpose species which can be utilized for fodder and honey production under harsh environmental conditions. In addition, wild Onobrychis species exhibit anti‐oxidant, anti‐diabetic, anti‐inflammatory, anti‐tumor, anti‐microbial, anti‐stressor and many other pharmacological effects. Wild Onobrychis species have not been the subject of detailed studies. Compared with the cultivated forage legumes, wild Onobrychis species are still under‐exploited despite their potential to alleviate forage and food insecurity, either by domestication or by providing novel alleles for breeding purposes of the cultivated species Onobrychis viciifolia. Our review aims to increase scientific awareness towards exploring the potential uses of wild Onobrychis species to tackle current climate change.This article is protected by copyright.
