CYTOTAXONOMY OF LOBELIA L. SECTION LOBELIA. III. L. SIPHILITICA L. AND L. CARDINALIS L.

Abstract: Bowden (1959a) discussed the phylogenetic relationships of the tu7enty-one species of Lobelia L. section LOBELIA. Bowden (1959b) gave a cytotaxonomic treatment of three diverse species and seven small-flowered species and Bowden (1960) treated four narrow-leaved species and five medium-flowered species. In the present paper, the final one of this series, two largc-flowered species are considered, namely, L. siphilitica L. and L. cardi~ialis L.The materials and methods used during these investigations have been… Show more

“…grn7~zi7zen (Lam.) A4cVaugh cultivar 'Illumination' described by Bowden (1960b), tetraploid L. x speciosn Sweet described by Bowden (1961a,b), and some of the artificial bispecific tetraploid hybrids described by Bowden (19616). Populations of three different tetraspecific tetraploid hybrids and one pentaspecific tetraploid hybrid were produced by making ful-ther crosses that involved the tetraploid species and the bispecific and trispecific tetraploid hybrids.…”

“…The materials of the Lobelin species used as seed or pollen parents of these artificial hybrids were described by Bowden (1959, 196Oa and1960b). The methods used during the Lobelin hybridization program were described by Bowden (1961).…”
