Cytoprotective effects of taxifolin against cadmium-induced apoptosis in human keratinocytes

Abstract: Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal widely used in industry, and the skin is an important target of this metal. Taxifolin (Tax), a natural source of bioflavonoids found in various conifers, exerts multiple biologic effects on skin cells. However, the mechanisms by which Tax protects keratinocytes against Cd are currently unclear. We investigated the cytoprotective effects of Tax against Cd-induced apoptosis in the human HaCaT keratinocyte. The water-soluble tetrazolium salt (WST-1) assay and Annexin V/propi… Show more

“…Taxifolin (TA) is a flavonoid substance present in Siberian larch ( Larix sibirica ) as well as being categorized as a metal-chelating agent [ 15 ]. In addition, it is a non-mutagenic agent and has reduced toxicity compared to other flavonoids [ 16 ]. Moreover, it has a range of biological actions involving antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and antiapoptotic features [ 17 , 18 ].…”

“…It is dangerous to all living organisms, including plants and animals [5,6]. When plants experiences toxic Cd, food chains are also probably affected by it, which may further lead to several human health problems such as renal failure, osteoporosis, liver cirrhosis, and Itai-Itai diseases [7][8][9][10][11]. It inhibits growth; activates or inhibits enzymes; affects water balance and ion transport; interferes with chlorophyll biosynthesis; inhibits various enzymes involved in the Calvin cycle; disrupts the evolution of O 2 over photosystem II (PSII); affects the transfer of electrons between PSI and PSII; and inhibits the activity of a variety of enzymes including carbonic anhydrase, NADP + glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase, fructose bis-phosphatase, and fructose-6phosphate kinase [12,13].…”
