Cytoprotective effects of Bergenia ciliata Sternb, extract on gastric ulcer in rats

Abstract: Bergenia ciliata is used for the treatment of stomach disorders in the folk medicine of some areas of South East Asia. This study was designed to evaluate its gastroprotective effects on ethanol/HCl, indomethacin and pylorus ligation-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Doses of 15, 30 and 60 mg/kg b/w of the aqueous and methanol extracts of the rhizome were administered 1 h after ulcerogenic treatment. The animals were killed 3 h later, their stomachs removed and the mean area of ulcer lesion was determined. The w… Show more

“…Several recent pharmacological and phytochemical studies on these two plants have now laid down the scientific evidence for their traditional medicinal uses. These include antioxidant activity (Bashir and Gilani, 2009;Rajkumar et al, 2010), cytoprotective (Kakub and Gulfraz, 2007), antimicrobial (Rajbhandari et al, 2001;Sinha et al, 2001;Islam et al, 2002a), inhibition of digestive enzymes (Bhandari et al, 2008;Saijyo et al, 2008), hypoglycaemic effect (Islam et al, 2002b) and inhibition of calcium oxalate crystal formation and/or aggregation (Joshi et al, 2005;Bashir and Gilani, 2009). The other popular Bergenia species, B. crassifolia, is known to be used in Russian ethnomedicine as well as for beverages (Ivanov et al, 2011).…”
