Cytoprotective Activities of Milk Thistle Seed Oil Used in Traditional Tunisian Medicine on 7-Ketocholesterol and 24S-Hydroxycholesterol-Induced Toxicity on 158N Murine Oligodendrocytes

Abstract: The Asteraceae family is economically very important, because many of these plants are grown mainly for their food value, such as lettuce (Lactuca), chicory (Cichorium), and sunflower (Heliantus aminus). One of the typical properties of this family, which includes milk thistle (Sylibum marianum), is the richness of the oil in various compounds (flavonoids, alkaloids, tocopherols, and unsaturated fatty acids). Currently, and for the coming decades, age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, are… Show more

“…This behaviour can thus be interpreted as a response to the curcumin metabolism, which translates into the action of the compounds produced through its degradation. Thus, the pH value, in response to the curcumin action, can be used as a biomarker, which is recognised as a parameter by both the present investigation and prior studies [41]. These results confirmed a previous study (), which proves the instability of this compound.…”

“…In 158N cells incubated with 7KC or 7β-OHC, the cytoprotective effect of dimethylfumarate (DMF; Tecfidera) and biotin (vitamin B8), which are used for the treatment of MS, have been shown [120,121]. Natural products including argan oil, milk thistle seed oil, sea urchin egg oil, Carpobrotus edulis ethanol-water extract also strongly attenuate 7KC and/or 7β-OHC-induced cytotoxicity [121][122][123][124][125].…”

“…Currently, N -acetyl-cysteine (NAC) as well as dimethylfumarate, and its major metabolite (monomethylfumarate), two inducers of the nuclear erythroid 2-like factor 2 (Nrf2) metabolic pathway [ 53 , 54 ], are the only synthetic molecules demonstrated to prevent 7KC- or 7β-hydroxycholesterol-induced oxiapoptophagy [ 55 , 56 ]. Mixtures of lipids (olive, argan and milk thistle seed oils) as well as Xuezhikang (red yeast rice extract) also have strong cytoprotective activities [ 30 , 57 ]. However, few data are available on the ability of polyphenols to prevent 7KC-induced cytotoxicity [ 58 ].…”
