Cytoplasmic expression of survivin is an independent predictor of poor prognosis in patients with salivary gland cancer

Abstract: The correlation between cytoplasmic survivin expression and survival in salivary gland malignancies might make this an effective tool in patient follow-up, prognosis and targeted therapy in future.

“…Nevertheless, most PGC are diagnosed comparatively early due to their location, and thus T1/2 tumors form a considerably amount of all PGC. According to literature, the incidence of T1/2 tumors is up to 44% of all PGC [9,15,16]. Taking into account these typical problems of a rare disease, the aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of lymph node metastasis in series of 70 patients treated for resectable early-stage PGC and evaluate the results with regard to the surgical management of PGC.…”

“…However, the clinical implication of survivin expression in the prognosis of SCCHN remains controversial. Overexpression of survivin has been reported as a negative prognostic factor in SCCHN (7,37,38). It also has been reported that survivin nuclear accumulation was an independent predictor of poor survival in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (39).…”

“…Moreover, increased nuclear survivin expression correlated with negative prognostic parameters such as advanced T and N stage and was significantly associated with lower diseasespecific survival rates. Recently, Stenner et al observed a correlation of cytoplasmic survivin expression with worse survival in a cohort of salivary adenocarcinomas (n = 27) and MECs (n = 21) [33]. This group evaluated the percentage of cytoplasmic positive tumor cells without regarding the staining intensity and had a mean follow-up time of only 30 months.…”
