Cytomorphology of primary pulmonary NUT carcinoma in different cytology preparations

Abstract: Background NUT carcinoma (NC) is an aggressive neoplasm that often presents with alarge tumor burden and metastases; cytology is frequently one of the primary diagnostic modalities. Primary pulmonary NCs are very rare and cytology descriptions are limited. The current study was performed to analyze the cytomorphological features of primary pulmonary NCs in different cytology samples and preparations. Methods A total of 15 cytology specimens from 10 patients with primary pulmonary NCs diagnosed primarily on his… Show more

“…The nuclei were large and hyperchromatic, which could be round, ovoid or irregular ( 45 47 ) ( Figures 3A, B ). Scattered bare nuclei were also observed ( 46 , 47 ). The nucleoli was prominent and nuclear chromatin was fine to granular ( 45 , 47 , 48 ).…”

“…The size of the nucleus is about twice that of the nucleus of a lymphocyte [298]. The cytological images are often rather similar to those described for small-cell lung carcinomas or poorly differentiated carcinomas [298,299]. Another differential diagnosis must be considered for an exceptional primitive lung Ewing sarcoma, too [298].…”

“…Diagnosis of NUT carcinoma can be performed with cytological material [298] (Figure 2). In this situation, the sample often contains many poorly cohesive tumor cells or, conversely, more cohesive tumor cells with small-or intermediate-sized nuclei with a single nucleolus within fine or fragmented granular chromatin [298,299] (Figure 2). The size of the nucleus is about twice that of the nucleus of a lymphocyte [298].…”
