Cytomorphological features of atypical polypoid adenomyoma of the endometrium

Abstract: This study highlights the cytomorphological features of atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APAM). Squamous morules and/or short fascicles of spindle cells were found in five of the six cases. A combination of cytomorphological features can lead to a suspicion of APAM and avoid an overdiagnosis as endometrioid carcinoma.

“…We reviewed 27 cases of APAs with cytological findings reported in the English literature (Table 2). 8‐11,13‐26 Seven of those cases involved neither atypical glandular cells nor spindle cells of APAs, similar to Cases 1 and 2. This suggests that cytological sampling of APAs is more difficult than expected.…”

“…In contrast, routine cytology of specimens in Cases 1-5 did not reveal spindle cells (Table 1) We reviewed 27 cases of APAs with cytological findings reported in the English literature (Table 2). “…In recent years, reports have demonstrated the utility of endometrial cytological examination, particularly liquid‐based cytology, in the diagnosis of endometrial carcinoma and various types of benign and reactive conditions . However, studies on the cytological features of endometrial small‐cell NEC are scarce, and the utility of endometrial cytology has not been elucidated.…”
