Cytomixis and Associated Abnormalities during Male Meiosis in Lindelofia longiflora var. falconeri (Boraginaceae)

Abstract: Summary Detailed male meiotic studies were made in Lindelofia longiflora (Royle ex Benth.) Baill. var. falconeri (Cl.) Brand (Family: Boraginaceae) from the cold deserts of Pangi Valley, Chamba District (Himachal Pradesh) in India. The meiotic course in some of the individuals was observed to be highly abnormal which include cytomixis involving chromatin transfer among meiocytes, spindle irregularities, chromatin stickiness and mutlipolar PMCs, resulting in abnormal sporads as dyads, triads, polyads and tetrad… Show more

“…Cytomixis induced meiotic irregularities and formation of hypo-and hyperploid PMCs has also been reported in several angiosperms (Omara 1976, Singhal and Gill 1985, Falistocco et al 1995, Malallah and Attia 2003, Ghaffari 2006, 2012, 2010, 2012, 2015, Singhal and Kumar 2008a, b, 2010, Singhal et al 2009, 2010, 2011a, b, 2014, Himshikha et al 2010, Kumar 2010, Kaur et al 2013, Rana et al 2013, 2014b, Mursalimov and Deineko 2011, 2012, 2015, Mursalimov et al 2013a. The phenomenon of cytomixis does not seem to have affected the pollen fertility to a greater extent in current case.…”

“…Cytomixis is one phenomenon that is under the influence of genetic and environmental factors [13] . After it was first recorded by Arnoldi (1900), the phenomenon of cytomixis and other abnormalities responsible for abnormal meiotic behavior and reduced pollen fertility have been reported in some flowering plants [9,12,[14][15][16] . However, the term 'cytomixis' was coined by Gates (1911), who studied the PMCs of Oenothera gigas and defined it as a phenomenon of transmigration of chromatin from one cell to an adjacent cell Cytomixis involves the migration of chromatin material among meiocytes through cytomictic connections [17] .…”
