Cytomegalovirus infection presenting as a colonic mass in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndromez

Abstract: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of the gastrointestinal tract occurs in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. Often presenting as ulcerative lesions, CMV infection rarely presents as a mass lesion in the gastrointestinal tract. We present a case of a discrete colonic mass caused by CMV infection in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This case illustrates that an infectious process such as CMV should be considered along with malignancy as the etiology of a mass lesion present … Show more

“…However, the rare presentation of CMV associated gastrointestinal pseudotumours presenting as intraluminal inflammatory polypoidal masses or strictures is reported mostly in immunocompromised patients. Only 31 cases of CMV pseudo tumour colitis were reported so far, among them 17 cases were in HIV positive patients [9][10][11]. Fourteen cases were reported in non HIV patients and only 6 out of them were in immunocompetent patients.…”

“…Discrete mass lesions of the gastrointestinal tract in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome are frequently caused by malignant neoplasms and mainly represented by Kaposi's sarcoma and lymphoma. Although infrequent, other causes of mass lesions in patients with immunodeficiency are represented by infections that encompass tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis, and histoplasmosis [Rajan et al, ].…”

“…CMV-associated mass lesion in AIDS is an uncommon entity. In a review done by Kelesidis et al in 2010 [ 7 ], there were only 15 cases of CMV pseudotumors published in the English literature since 1980 [ 9 ]. They have been increasingly observed though over the past decade during the advent of HAART therapy as survival of these patients has improved.…”

“…Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are the most common intraluminal lesions encountered in AIDS. However, a less common cause of mass-like lesion in AIDS can be induced by CMV [ 9 ]. Here we present the unique case of an intraluminal colonic mass caused by CMV infection in an AIDS patient.…”
