Cytomegalovirus antibody status at 17–18 weeks of gestation and pre‐eclampsia: a case–control study of pregnant women in Norway

Abstract: Objective To assess the association between maternal cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibodies in mid-pregnancy and preeclampsia.Design Nested case-control study.Setting Pregnancies registered in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa): a large population-based pregnancy cohort (1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006).Sample A cohort of 1500 women with pre-eclampsia and 1000 healthy pregnant women. Methods Plasma samples and pregnancy-related information were provided by the MoBa. Antibody status (CMV… Show more

“…In a Chinese study of 52 pregnant women with preeclampsia and 34 women with uncomplicated pregnancy in their third trimester, seroprevalence of recent and long-dated CMV infections was similar in women with preeclampsia and women with normal pregnancy [ 21 ]. In a Norwegian study, no evidence of an effect of CMV IgG seropositivity on the likelihood of developing preeclampsia was found [ 22 ].…”

“…Strand KM et al [24] studied cytomegalovirus IgG and IgM in plasma sample of a cohort of 1500 women with pre-eclampsia and 1500 healthy pregnant women. They concluded that maternal antibodies to cytomegalovirus was not associated with pre-eclampsia; their result suggested that cytomegalovirus infection was unlikely be a major cause of PE.…”

“…Mid-pregnancy plasma samples from about 1500 pre-eclamptic women and 1000 controls in MoBa were analyzed with respect to antibody status (IgG and IgM). Adjusted for maternal age, parity and smoking, the odds ratio for pre-eclampsia in women positive for CMV IgG was 0.89 (95% CI: 0.74-1.05) [25]. In nulliparous women a slight, but statistically significant, protective effect of CMV was found.…”
