Cytokine Storm in Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19): Expert Management Considerations

Abstract: Aim/objective/introduction Cytokine storm or cytokine release syndrome (CRS) is inevitable in severe and critically ill patients with novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). This review aimed to discuss current therapeutic options for the management of CRS in COVID-19. Background Cytokine storm is caused by the colossal release of proinflammatory cytokines [e.g., IL (interleukin)-2, IL-6, IL-8 TNF (tumor necrosis factor)-α, etc.] causing dysregulated, hyperimmune res… Show more

“…Thus, one has to distinguish between and understand why only few are seriously affected. Similarly, children are less likely to develop serious SARS-CoV-2 infection, and those who develop serious disease suffer from multisystem inflammatory syndrome [1]. Current understanding of COVID-19 suggests that the virus uses angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) receptor and the cellular protease transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) to enter target cells.…”

“…O analiză sistematică recentă a raportat că utilizarea GC poate fi dăunătoare pacienților cu COVID-19 [Kronbichler A., 2020]. Studiile mici ulterioare și clinice randomizate au raportat îmbunătățirea rezultatelor clinice la pacienții cu COVID-19 tratați cu GC [4,9,13,14,21,22,34].…”
