Cytokeratin-19 fragments in serum (CYFRA 21-1) as a marker in primary liver cancer

Abstract: Using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay, CYFRA 21-1 concentrations were measured in sera from 187 patients with primary liver cancer (164 with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and 23 with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC)) and 87 patients with benign liver diseases. Concentrations of CYFRA 21-1 were significantly higher in patients with ICC (5.0; interquartile range 3.1 -10.7 ng ml À1 ) than in those with benign liver disease (1.4; 1.0 -1.9; Mann -Whitney U-test, Po0.0001) or HCC (1.7; 1.1 -2.7; MannWh… Show more

“…This finding may also support the notion that CA-125 is of mesothelial rather than tumoral origin. This is consistent with the findings in previous studies (Bergmann et al 1987;Zeimet et al 1996;Epiney et al 2000;Sjoval et al 2002;Miralles et al 2003;Uenishi et al 2003).…”

“…To increase the sensitivity of the peritoneal fluid study, several tumor markers have been analysed (Sarı 2001;Kiluk et al 2002;Sedlaczek et al 2002;Sehouli et al 2003;Uenishi et al 2003). Besides, the development of a peritoneal malignancy is frequently associated with high blood levels of tumor markers such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen-125 (CA-125), carbohydrate antigen-19.9 (CA-19.9), carbohydrate antigen-15.3 (CA-15.3) and ferritin.…”

“…Thus, the screening for HCC is useful in detecting ICC in patients with chronic hepatitis C although the effectiveness of tumor marker measurement is unclear. Recently, we found the serum concentration of cytokeratin-19 fragments (CYFRA 21-1) to be useful as a diagnostic test for ICC, although the role of CYFRA 21-1 in screening has not yet been established [27]. Development of specific markers for ICC would considerably facilitate screening for ICC.…”

“…The neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is a highly specific marker for neurons (10), with its serum level being a potentially useful marker for the detection of tumors of neuronal origin (11,12). Cytokeratin 19 (CYFRA21-1) is another useful tumor marker employed in the diagnosis of various types of cancer (13)(14)(15), and is particularly sensitive in adenocarcinomas in the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas (13,16 (2,17). Combined with ultrasonography, AFP is the most common clinical approach to diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma (18).…”
