This account of chromosome variation in the Commelinaceae is based both on the authors' personal experience with a very large living collection of the family at Kew, and on the numerous reports of earlier workers. There can be few families showing such a wide range of chromosome numbers, karyotype morphology and meiotic behaviour, the description of which may be of interest to cytologists, evolutionists and taxonomists alike. In this present survey the information is presented within the framework of a tentative classification of genera proposed by Brenan, and comments are made throughout on the relevance of cytology to his taxonomic treatment of the family. It is hoped that this account will foster further interest in the Commelinaceae, and in particular, encourage more thorough appraisal of intraspecific chromosome variation and interspecific homologies.

In an earlier paper (Mehra et al. 1961a), the chromosome behaviour during meiosis was reported in a few species and two undescribed taxa of the genus Setcreasea of the Commelinaceae. The taxon II was subsequently described as Setcreasea ovata (Coulter) Faruqi, Celarier and Mehra due to its morphological distinction and reproductive isolation from other species (Faruqi et al. 1962). A survey of the morphological variation conducted on the herbarium and living materials indicated that taxon I is closely related to S. brevifolia (Torr.) Sch. et Sydow, but the question whether it should be included within S. brevifolia or treated as a separate entity could not be decided. Therefore, taxon I and S. breviolfia were crossed with each other in order to study their reproductive isolation and understand their chromosomal homologies. This paper deals with the cytotaxonomical analysis of the parents and their hybrids.

The nature of ploidy (auto-, allo-, or segmental-allo-, polyploidy) in Setcreasea species and mode of chromosome pairing (auto or allo-syndesis) in their interspecific hybrids were difficult to ascertain since the frequencies of multivalents were low and the individual sets of chromosomes were morphologically indistinguishable at metaphase I of meiosis in these materials (Mehra et al. 1961a(Mehra et al. , b, 1963a(Mehra et al. , b, 1965. However, further, insight into these aspects could be sought by analysing whether or not all sets of four homo logous or homoeologous chromosomes have the same probability to pair as quadrivalents.The application of the binomial distribution to the problem of chromosome pairing was explained in detail by Hall (1955), who used this procedure on data collected from literature to show that in hybrids between closely related species the pairing frequencies were uniform from one set of chromosomes to the next but in hybrids of distinctly related species these were non-uniform. The patterns of distribution of multivalents were success fully used in elucidating the chromosomal homologies and genomic differenti ations in natural and induced tetraploid Dactylis (McCollum 1958) and Solanum tuberosum L. (Sinha et al. 1965). Similar analyses were undertaken in Setcreasea species and hybrids by testing the different frequencies of multivalent formations (or preferential pairing) among the six sets of homologous or homoeologous chromosomes. The following aspects were analysed; i) whether the distribution of multivalents followed a binomial pattern or not; ii) whether differences amongst various species and their hybrids existed in respect of this behaviour, and iii) whether there was any evidence of differential behaviour of chromosomes within and between different genomes.
