. Summary -The effect of static magnetic fields on body size of Drosophila melanogaster was analyzed on 3 laboratory stocks reared under chronic exposure to a magnetic field 10-12-fold greater than the earth's. A significant increase in body size was observed which persisted even when the flies were returned to control environmental conditions after a few generations of exposure. The genetic basis of the differences observed between treated and control lines was assessed analyzing 2 fitness components and 4 dimensional characters. The increase in body size was mainly associated with cell number, suggesting that the magnetic field effect on size depends on genes which control cell proliferation.

An alteration in morphogenetic development induced in Drosophila melanogaster pupae by exposure to a magnetic probe was shown to persist for more than 30 generations. With succeeding inbred crossings, an initial increase in the time of development through the embryonic and postembryonic stages gradually approached the level found in control cultures. As the development time decreased, a concomitant increase occurred in the yield of progeny. The pattern of morphogenesis suggested a condition of homeostasis operating in an oscillating epigenetic system. The concept of a feedback control mechanism was employed to examine details of the alterations in development time. The data were compatible with this model and rates of recovery from an initial perturbation were determined in several series inbred for a large number of generations. Variations in rate constants and mechanisms involved in the magnetic field inhibition are discussed.

Fusion reactors will utilize powerful magnetic fields for the confinement and heating of plasma and for the diversion of impurities. Large dipole fields generated by the plasma current and the divertor and transformer coils will radiate outward for several hundred meters, resulting in magnetic fields up to 450 gauss in working areas. Since occupational personnel could be exposed to substantial magnetic fields in a fusion power plant, an attempt has been made to assess the possible biological and health consequences of such exposure, using the existing literature. The available data indicate that magnetic fields can interact with biological material to produce effects, although the reported effects are usually small in magnitude and often unconfirmed. The existing data base is judged to be totally inadequate for assessment of potential health and environmental consequences of magnetic fields and for the establishment of appropriate standards. Requisite studies to provide an adequate data base are outlined.
