“…The two sets of this karyotype therefore may be designated as two separate genomes and this sample may be allopolyploid. The diploid number of 2n=8 recorded in sample 1 agrees with a number of counts for this species (McCullagh 1934, Rahn 1966, Stebbins and Day 1967. No poly ploid counts were recorded from other parts of the world, but Badr (1980) found 2n=16 in plants from Egypt.…”

“…At meiotic prophase, the chromocentres started to be distributed at various positions along the auto somes. In some chromosomes, they were resolved into a string of chromomeres larger than normal chromomeres, a condition similar to that found in the meiotic prophase of Plantago insularis (Stebbins and Day 1967). In such a case, the hetero chromatic regions of the homologous chromosomes synapse completely at the pachy tene stage behaving like the euchromatin.…”

“…On the basis of com parative studies of their distribution near the centromere, Stebbins (1971) showed that chromocentres and similar concentrations may have considerable evolutionary value. For example, Hordeum vulgare and Plantago ovata are specialized annuals which contain well marked chromocentres.…”

“…It grows in arid and semi-arid sandy temperate regions of western India, mainly in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan 19 . Its natural habitat is in the Mediterranean region of southern Europe and North Africa, Middle East, central Asia and southern Russia 20 . Excess of metals in the soil affects plant metabolism and plants have evolved different mechanisms to cope with it.…”
