Cytogenetic bio-dosimetry techniques in the detection of dicentric chromosomes induced by ionizing radiation: A review

Abstract: Ionizing radiation is ubiquitous in the environment. Its source can be natural, such as radioactive materials present in soil and cosmic rays, or artificial, such as the fuel for nuclear power plants. Overexposure to ionizing radiation may damage living tissue and could cause severe health problems (i.e., mutations, radiation sickness, cancer, and death). Cytogenetic bio-dosimetry has the great advantage to take into account the inter-individual variation, and it is informative even when physical dosimetry is … Show more

“…For further validation, quantitative in vitro studies could be conducted to study the radiation response of lymphocytes with different treatment modalities and parameters (Heylmann et al 2021). In addition, cytogenetic bio-dosimetry methods such as counting the frequency of dicentric chromosomes in peripheral blood lymphocytes could be considered, where the frequency of dicentric chromosomes increases with radiation dose (Kelly and Brown 1965, Ludovici et al 2021. With development of detailed vasculature also in animal models (Fung et al 2011, Peeters et al 2017, validation with in vitro and in vivo experiments would be of great interest to evaluate the accuracy of dose estimation and the clinical translation feasibly.…”

“…The dose response for induction of point mutations is linear, while that for deletions fits a linear quadratic response [ 64 , 65 ]. Chromosomal aberrations as dicentric chromosomes have a linear quadratic dose response [ 66 ]. In case of chromosomal translocations, the data are not consistent and suggest a linear [ 67 , 68 ] or linear quadratic dose response [ 69 , 70 ].…”

“…Ionizing radiation can deposit energy in a system and it is ubiquitous in the environment. Its source can be natural such as radioactive materials and cosmic rays or artificial, such as nuclear power plants [10]. Recently, there has been a strong interest in the health of organisms in radioactively contaminated sites such as those of Chernobyl and Fukushima Dai-ichi.…”
