Cytogenetic Analysis of Subcutaneous Angiolipoma: Further Evidence Supporting Its Difference from Ordinary Pure Lipomas

Abstract: Subcutaneous angiolipomas are benign soft-tissue lesions consisting of two mesenchymal elements (i.e., adipose tissue and blood vessels) and having distinct clinical features. They usually are multiple, with an obvious male predominance, and hereditary occurrence has been described. Twenty subcutaneous angiolipomas from 10 patients with typical clinical and morphologic features were reviewed. All lesions had a normal karyotype. This finding is in striking contrast with ordinary lipomas, spindle-cell and pleomo… Show more

“…Neither atypia, pleomorphism or mitotic figures or karyotypical abnormalities were found [4]. Sciot et al's [82] analysis of the karyotype in 20 angiolipomas revealed that all were normal; the authors speculate that a normal karyotype supports the theory of angiolipomas as a reactive or hamartomatous lesion. They also suggest that the vascular proliferation could be a primary event in the development of these tumors, and the adipose tissue, a secondary, albeit prominent, component.…”

“…21) Normal karyotypes in a study of 20 patients with angiolipoma suggest the lesion is reactive or hamartomatous. 27) Angiolipoma may constitute an intermediate entity in the spectrum of hemangiomas and lipomas. The more invasive infiltrating type of spinal angiolipoma would then represent a shift towards the hemangioma end of the spectrum.…”

“…For this reason, it has been proposed that they may represent hamartomas rather than true neoplasms. 7 Histopathologically, they are composed of a variable proportion of mature fat cells and thin-walled capillaries. The vascular component constitutes up to 90% or more of the lesions, and fibrin thrombi are frequently observed.…”
