Cytogenetic analysis of four species of Pseudis (Anura, Hylidae), with the description of ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes in P. tocantins

Abstract: Pseudis paradoxa paradoxa, P. p. platensis, P. bolbodactyla, P. fusca and P. tocantins were analyzed cytogenetically by conventional chromosomal staining, C-banding, silver staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization with an rDNA probe. Pseudis tocantins chromosomes were also stained with distamycin A/DAPI. All of the species had a diploid number of 2n = 24 chromosomes and the nucleolar organizer region (NOR) was located on pair 7. However, the karyotypes could be differentiated based on the morphology of c… Show more

“…L. caraya differs from other taxa having all metacentric chromosomes and NORs on 6p [Busin et al, 2006], whereas the remaining species with 2n = 24 have nuclear constrictions and NORs on pair 7q [Busin et al, 2000;present work]. Although P. cardosoi bears the NORs on 5q [Busin et al, 2000[Busin et al, , 2008, these chromosomes should be considered homeologous to 7q chromosomes of other Lysapsus and Pseudis karyotypes, as the different location in the karyotype would be a consequence of the fissions of pairs 1 and 4 that originated the 28-chromosome karyotype [Busin et al, 2000]. Additional NORs were detected on 1q and 8q pairs in L. bolivianus and on 7q in L. caraya [Busin et al, 2006].…”

“…It is possible that the association between sex chromosomes and rRNA genes is a general feature of Diptera. rDNA Positions in the tripunctata Radiation of Drosophila In eukaryotes, ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA) are present in multiple copies in the heterochromatin [Andronico et al, 1985;Dubcovsky and Dvorak, 1995;Hirai et al, 1998;Shishido et al, 2000;Busin et al, 2008]. Actually, in Diptera most of the heterochromatin is found on the sex chromosomes and on the dot chromosomes.…”

“…Numerous studies about chromosome analyses have provided information for studies in taxonomy and phylogeny, and are also used as a fundamental characteristic in species identification (Busin et al 2001;Aguiar et al 2002Aguiar et al , 2004Busin et al 2006Busin et al , 2008Lourenço et al 2008).…”
