Cytogenetic analysis of B chromosomes in one population of the fish Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (Steindachner, 1907) (Teleostei, Characiformes)

Abstract: The aim of this study was to characterize cytogenetically one population of the fish Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (Steindachner, 1907), with emphasis on the analysis of B chromosomes. The nucleolar activity in the B microchromosomes was characterized, and an analysis of mitotic instability of these microchromosomes was accomplished. The results showed a diploid chromosome number of 50 chromosomes. In all individuals, we observed the presence of B microchromosomes with intra- and inter-individual variability. T… Show more

“…sanctaefilomenae harbour B chromosomes [ 21 25 ]. Since their first description, several authors have proposed the occurrence of three B types in this species, distinguishable by their C-banding patterns [ 21 , 24 ]. Recently, it was reported that some B chromosomes in this species carry 18S rDNA clusters, while others do not [ 25 ].…”

“…B chromosomes containing 18S rRNA genes have been described in different fish species [ 9 , 62 ], but their activity has only been demonstrated for the euchromatic variant (B 1 ) in M . sanctaefilomenae [ 24 ]. Several other examples of NOR-bearing B chromosomes have been described in different organisms reviewed in [ 61 ], and there is no general trend between the C-banding response and NOR activity of the B chromosomes.…”

“…The B chromosomes described here are primarily composed of heterochromatic sequences, specifically the AATAT satellite repeat. Although these chromosomes appear to possess centromeres, like many B chromosomes they are mitotically unstable ( Voltolin et al 2012 ).…”

“…The B chromosomes have been described in many neotropical fish groups (see, for example, Maistro et al 1992, Oliveira et al 1997, Maistro et al 2000, Torres-Mariano and Morelli 2008, Ferreira-Neto et al 2012, Hashimoto et al 2012, Silva et al 2014). The occurrence of this type of chromosome among individuals of a population can be sporadic or commonly found for many individuals, and high frequency can be shown between them.…”

“…The occurrence of this type of chromosome among individuals of a population can be sporadic or commonly found for many individuals, and high frequency can be shown between them. It is also possible to find variations regarding to morphology, size, number and pattern of heterochromatin in the B chromosomes (Maistro et al 1992, Venere et al 1999, Cavallaro et al 2000, Fernandes and Martins-Santos 2005, Artoni et al 2006, Hashimoto et al 2012, Barbosa et al 2015). …”
