Cytodynamics of the Immune Response in Two Lines of Mice Genetically Selected for "High" and "Low" Antibody Synthesis

Abstract: Two lines of mice have been separated by selective breeding for the character "agglutinin production to heterologous erythrocytes." Around the 18th generation of selection the two lines could be considered as homozygous for the character investigated. This trait is under the control of a group of additive genes. The interline difference in the production of anti-SE agglutinins was verified for the range of antigen doses from subimmunogenic to maximal. After intravenous immunization with an optimal dose of SE, … Show more

“…The mechanism behind these adjuvant effects was sug gested to be interference with phagocyte functions [10,16] which would be in favour of the persistence of the antigen [7,27,38,39], This explanation is in line with observations made in Biozzi mice, suggesting that an impaired phagocyte function was related to high immune-responsiveness and vice versa [4,37], Polyanions have also effects on the complement (C) cascade. The anticomplementary behaviour was shown to concern both the classical and alternative activation pathways which appeared to be inhibited by direct [23,26,36] and indirect [3,9,14,18,29] means.…”

“…In G2m(n,n) patients the IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4 levels were significantly higher than in those lacking this allotype. These pa tients showed high levels also of IgE and IgGl and could be compared with the findings of high-respond ing Biozzi mice [3]. Healthy G2m(n) individuals expressing one or two alleles of G2m(n) have been reported to have higher IgG2 and IgG4 [5,20].…”

“…Hdmmerling et al [6] also reported that the high-responder and lowresponder mice to a branched, multichain polypeptide(T, G)-A--L had about the same number of antigen-binding cells both in the spleens and lymph nodes. According to Biozzi et al [2], the strain difference in antibody production against sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) between two strains of mice was found to be attributable principally to the difference in doubling times of cells engaged in antibody response rather than to different numbers of antigen-specific lymphocytes initiating the immune response. In the present work, the numbers of hemolytic foci and PFC increased comparably (about 13 times) from day 2 to day 3 in SL mice (Tables 1 and 2).…”
