“…Overall, the mechanical strength of the collagen-chitosan hydrogel was greater than collagen-only. The range of elastic moduli for both matrix formulations (hydrated) was similar to those reported for a poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogel developed for the encapsulation and rapid recovery of viable and functional 3D β-cell spheroids [45], and a gelatin-poly (vinylpyrrolidone) hydrogel which supported mouse islets for up to 30d [46]. Therefore, it appears that our matrices, and in particular the collagen-chitosan hydrogels, have suitable physical properties for the support of angiogenic cells and islets.…”

“…Additionally, glucose is a potent stimulator for islet neogenesis and amino acids are also beneficial to the cell, which adds on the benefit of DEXGEL scaffold. Gelatin-based scaffold has been exploited in islet cell culture 35 in regard that it is a partially degradable form of collagen, which constitutes the major part of ECM in native islets. The short peptide fragments or R-G-D (Arginine-Glycine-Aspartate) sequence in gelatin plays a major role in binding of integrins, mainly a5b1 and a5b3, which helps native islets in maintaining its intact architecture.…”

“…Likewise, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) is a polymer as one of the constituent in a polymer blend having properties such as colloidal stabilizer and dispersant . PVP when used in composite polymer blends explicitly revealed properties such as hydrogelation nature, considered as a suitable container for biological cues, provides nanoporous structures, cytocompatibility and improved resistance to degradability in body fluids …”
