“…polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), PAHs are more readily biotran sformed by most organism groups, however, to a greatly varying extent (Cerniglia & Heitkamp, 1989, Livingsto ne, 1992. Like other eucaryotes, marine invertebrates use the cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase or mixed function oxygenase (MFO) enzyme system for the biotransformation of PAHs (James, 1989, den Besten, 1998, James & Boyle, 1998, Lee, 1998, Snyder, 2000. Aside from catalyzing a great variety of endogenous reactions, as for instance the metabolism of steroid hormones and fatty acids (Mansuy, 1998) , Foureman, 1989.…”

“…Organisms that are in direct contact with pollutants may be suitable bioindicators (RAJAGURU et al, 2003). Among invertebrates, many crustaceans are able to metabolize xenobiotics such as PAHs due to a well-developed cytochrome P450 enzyme system (JAMES and BOYLE, 1998;LIVINGSTONE, 1998;MARTÍN-DÍAZ et al, 2008). This enzymatic system acts in phase I metabolism by adding functional groups through the oxidation, reduction or hydrolysis of non-reactive xenobiotics, converting them into activated metabolites capable of conjugating with water-soluble groups so as to be excreted by phase II metabolism (LISKA, 1998).…”

“…However, direct regulatory role of steroid hormones in reproduction is not obvious in crustaceans as hemolymph lev-els of testosetrone, 17α-hydroxytestosterone and 17β-estradiol did not significantly vary in females M. rosenbergii during the ovarian cycle (Martins et al 2007) as well as in females of Marsupenaeus japonicus Bate, 1888 (Okumura & Sakiyama, 2004). The cytochrome P450 system is responsible for synthesis of steroid hormones and their metabolisation (formation of hydroxylated or dehydrogenated metabolites) in crustaceans but it seems to be different from the pathways known in vertebrates (James & Boyle 1998). Further, enzymes involved in ecdysteroidogenesis might also be involved in metabolism of other steroids but it has not been studied in detail yet.…”

“…Available data provide a clear evidence that crustaceans are vulnerable to diverse chemicals and toxicants in the environment (James & Boyle 1998;Olmstead & LeBlanc 2007;Verslycke et al 2007), thus a range of crustacean species is often used in ecotoxicological research. In particular, compounds and pollutants affecting endocrine homeostasis (i.e., endocrine disruptors) are intensively studied also in crustaceans (Hutchinson 2002;LeBlanc 2007, Rodriguez et al 2007).…”
