Abstract

Cytochrome c 553 in sulfate‐reducing bacteria, Desulfovibrio vulgaris , receives electrons from formate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase, and then transfers them to cytochrome c 3 . Cytochrome c 553 is a monoheme c ‐type cytochrome with an absorption band at 553 nm in the reduced form and is the smallest c ‐type cytochrome with a molecular weight of 9000. Its three‐dimensional structure has been determined by both x‐ray crystallography and NMR.
