Cytisus scoparius (Fam. Fabaceae) in southern Brazil - first step of an invasion process?

Abstract: The occurrence of Scotch broom Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link (Fabaceae), is reported for the fi rst time in Brazil. The species has been registered in the species-rich Campos Sulinos grasslands, in the Campos de Cima da Serra, and in the Serra do Sudeste. Naturalizing populations were frequently formed in natural habitats near to human settlements, where prevailing land uses and disturbances facilitate dispersal and establishment. The plant is an invasive species that has globally caused signifi cant damage to b… Show more

“…The height of generative adults in South Africa has been established between 110 cm and 560 cm (MbaTha, 2016), in India up to 300 cm (srinivasan et al, 2007). The study on C. scoparius in Brazil has revealed that the average height of generative adults across populations range from 220 cm to 260 cm (león CoRDeRo et al, 2016). However, information on the variation in height of vegetative adults and juveniles from the native and invasive range is insufficient.…”

“…In other areas of Europe, C. scoparius is considered as alien species (Frodin & HeywooD, 1968;Gavrilova & Šulcs, 1999;saraTeanu et al, 2017). This species has been introduced and has become invasive in many regions of the world, including North America (Parker et al, 2002;oneto et al, 2010;Muir & va-Mosi, 2015), South America (isaacson, 2000;león CoRDeRo et al, 2016), South Africa (MkhiZe et al, 2013;MbaTha, 2016), Asia (suZuki, 2000;sriniva san et al, 2011), Australia and New Zealand (Wil-liaMs, 1981;Downey & sMiTh, 2000;sMiTh, 2000;Tran et al, 2016).…”

“…The shrub scotch broom ( Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link) is native across central Europe and the British Isles but has been classified as an invasive species elsewhere (e.g. in the United States, Chile, Australia, New Zealand (Kang, Buckley, & Lowe, ), Brazil (Cordero, Torchelsen, Overbeck, & Anand, ), South Africa (Mkhize, Mhlambi, & Nanni, ) and India (Srinivasan, Shenoy, & Gleeson, ). Since its first record in southern Norway in 1876 (Blytt, ), it has spread northwards (Figure , see Appendix ) and has also increased in abundance in threatened habitats, such as endangered coastal heathlands (Lindgaard & Henriksen, ).…”
